Aspirational Careers Week 2016 - Report and Pictures

Aspirational careers week (3)

Our annual Aspirational Careers Week took place last month, giving all students a range of work-related learning and careers education, advice and guidance opportunities.

The week is designed to provide students with information on many different careers, including those to which they may not be exposed in everyday life, from a wide range of subject areas.

Throughout this week, all teaching staff dedicated the first 5-10 minutes of each lesson to information on different careers within their subject area. This consisted of:

  • a day in the life of, for example, a trader, human resource manager or business analyst
  • different careers and what each entails
  • skills and qualifications needed for various careers
  • famous/renowned individuals and their achievements within a career/degree
  • average gross salaries of a particularly career/ industry area
  • and much else besides.

Future Pathways Event

Within this week we also held our annual Future Pathways Event, where guest speakers from different industries and higher education institutes visit to deliver workshops and presentations, and have displays and stalls at our very own careers/next steps fair. This event provides further insights for our students.

Students in years 7-9 attend the afternoon with their subject teachers between periods 4 and 5 and a  treasure hunt was used to encourage the students to seek certain information and speak to our visitors.

Students from years 9-13 were also given the opportunity to opt into the different workshops and presentations on offer throughout the day.

From 3.10pm onwards all students and parents were invited to our careers/next steps fair, full of informative stalls staffed by our guest visitors.

This event was organised by our Head of Sixth Form, Ms White, and her team, so a huge thank you for making it such a success with a record attendance from guests and students, in addition to many positive reviews from both students and visitors.

I really appreciated having the non-academic higher education institutions present such as Plumpton College who offer a range of agricultural qualifications. Year 9 student.

The treasure hunt worked extremely well in engaging the younger students, I have never seen so many get actively involved and ask questions. Visitor.

Careers Soundbite Clips

In addition to this week's events, we have added to our soundbite clips on our large plasma screen within the Harris Building, to provide further insights into a range of different careers.

These clips include the qualifications, work experience, skills and determination needed to secure certain careers.

We now have a clip from one of the BBC’s entertainment presenters in addition to a range of careers from sports journalists, lawyers, bankers, teachers, entrepreneurs/business owners and fashion designers.

If anyone is keen to further add to our bank of soundbite career clips, please feel free to send them in!

Thank you
