HGAED to Offer Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award

Map readingWe are excited to be offering the Duke of Edinburgh award for the first time at Harris Girls' Academy East Dulwich, to girls in Years 9, 10 and 12.

The Bronze award is a fantastic opportunity for HGAED students to gain new skills, make friends, give back to the community and step out of their comfort zone. It also equips students with skills and qualities highly beneficial to their future education and employment.

To discover more about the exciting journey that your daughter/ward could undertake, why not come to an information evening at the Academy on Thursday 5th of December, 5.00pm-6.00pm.

There are limited participant places on the DoE Award Scheme, with places allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis. Application forms will be accepted from Monday 2nd December and enrolment will close on Monday 9th December. Download an application form.

At the information evening you'll learn about the different sections of the scheme and how you can help students achieve their award. This will include information about the activities for the sections, training, expeditions. To take part in the award, students complete one hour of activity each week for six months in the following three sections: skills, physical and volunteering.

The final section of the award is the expedition where students are required to walk, navigate and camp in the countryside for two days and one night. Students will be trained over the course of the year in map reading, route planning and camping skills to prepare them for this challenging and highly rewarding part of the award.

This exciting opportunity will be available to Years 9, 10 and 12. Students who complete the Bronze award will be able to advance to the prestigious Silver and Gold awards.

If your daughter/ward is offered a place there is a £22.00 fee to enrol on the award (free for students in receipt of free school meals) payable on ParentPay on Monday December 16th.

There will be a further expedition fee of not more than £50.00 (subsidised for students in receipt of free school meals) This will help contribute to the cost of travel, campsites and equipment. Details of this will be provided in the spring term.

I am looking forward to supporting students as they start their DofE journey. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further questions or queries.

Ms J.Lee, Duke of Edinburgh Manager (J.Lee@harrisdulwichgirls.org.uk)
