Our Girls in Drawing Exhibition at International Architects

Schools of Art 5

An exhibition of drawings by girls at HGAED is on display at internationally renowned architects Allies and Morrison, just across the road from Tate Modern.

It’s the result of a project that saw over 300 Southwark primary and secondary students from nine different schools visit Dulwich Picture Gallery during the spring term to experience one-off workshops designed to encourage an innovative, inclusive approach to drawing.

The workshop was intended to be fun and experimental with the aim of dispelling apprehension or reluctance around drawing or a first time visit to a gallery. Meeting students for the first time with no prior knowledge of their previous experience of drawing, artists Jo and Nikki had 1¾ hours to challenge and support these students through an experimental artistic drawing process.

Every workshop was grounded in the five fundamental aspects of drawing: form, tone, mark-making, line and composition - offering students the chance to explore these elements through different materials, textures and techniques. Students spent time in the Gallery immersed in the collection’s landscapes, which formed the inspiration for enquiry-based discussion, personal response, note-taking, sketching and observational drawing.

Celebrating achievements

Over 100 of the works have now been beautifully hung at architects Allies and Morrison, who kindly supported the project. Every student's work is represented digitally. “This is a really great opportunity for pupils and parents to see their achievements prominently celebrated in a stunning exhibition,” said Thomas Sherriff of Dulwich Picture Gallery.

The Schools of Art exhibition at Allies and Morrison, 85 Southwark Street, London SE1 0HX (just across the road from Tate Modern) continues until Friday 14 April (Mon-Fri, 10am-5pm).

As practice makes perfect, I cannot but make progress; each drawing one makes, each study one paints, is a step forward.
