Upcycling Project

In DT Textiles, Year 9 students have been exploring upcycling and sustainable fashion, and they have approached the project with real creativity and maturity. Students were challenged to transform an unwanted item of clothing into something new and purposeful. The outcomes were impressive, with students repurposing dresses into cropped tops and skirts, turning shirts into cropped tops, and creating a range of accessories and homeware including headbands, scrunchies and cushions.

Through this project, students have developed key skills that extend well beyond the classroom, including design development, planning, measuring and cutting accurately, sewing and construction techniques, finishing and presentation, and evaluating their work against a design brief. They also strengthened important “life skills” such as problem-solving, resilience, attention to detail and independence, while gaining a deeper understanding of sustainability and reducing textile waste.

We are extremely proud of Year 9 for the way they have embraced this challenge, built their confidence, and produced work that connects directly to real-world design and manufacturing.
