Our Uniform

The Academy uniform is an important part of our collective identity and sense of community. Students at Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich are expected to wear the uniform in its entirety to the Academy on all occasions.

It is important that students present themselves as ambassadors of the Academy at all times including when they are in public places or travelling to and from the Academy.

Second-hand, nearly new and lightly worn uniform

The academy keeps a small stock of second-hand, nearly new and lightly worn uniform. Please contact the academy should you wish to access our uniform store. We always appreciate donations of good quality items. Should you wish to donate items of uniform, please clearly label any donations and drop them to the academy reception.

The cost of uniform

We strongly believe in the positive impact that the Academy uniform has on our school community. However, we also recognise the barriers and difficulties that an expensive uniform can bring. 

Currently, students are only required to have the following items:

• Branded blazer
• Branded PE top

The approximate new cost of our essential branded items is £90.

• Sports socks are optional
• Blue v-neck jumper is optional

Other items

You can buy the following items from any high street store/online shop/supermarket:

• Black pleated skirt or black trousers
• White open neck blouse
• Black polishable shoes
• Plain white or black socks
• Plain tights – black
• Plain black or dark navy blue outdoor coat

Other uniform items (e.g. shirts, trousers, etc.) that are not branded, can be purchased from a retailer of your choice. You can download our uniform and equipment policy, including a list of uniform, from the bottom of this page.

 

PE kit (compulsory)

• Stevensons (www.stevensons.co.uk) will supply the Academy fitted sports T-shirt. 
• Plimsolls or trainers with white socks which can be bought from any shop. 

PE kit (optional - only available from Stevensons) 

• Academy navy tapered sports trousers or plain navy sports trousers
• Academy navy skirt 
• Academy navy sports socks

Essential equipment

Every student must come to school prepared for learning, every day. All students should attend the Academy with the following essential equipment:

• Pencil case with pens, ruler, eraser
• Scientific calculator
• Reading book (Year 7-9 issued through library lessons)
• A black bag that is big enough to hold A4 books and folders

Jewellery, nails, lashes

Students are only permitted to wear small, simple, single stud earrings and a watch. Multiple earrings are not permitted and will be removed and confiscated for collection by parents. Piercings are not allowed. All jewellery must be removed for PE lessons. 

No false nails or eyelashes should be worn in the academy. Nail colour should be neutral.  Students must remove these items prior to entering the academy.

Hair colour

We do not allow students to attend the Academy with hair that has been dyed with colours considered unnatural.

Electronic equipment

In order to prevent distractions and disruption, the Academy operates a “zero tolerance” policy for all electronic equipment including mobile phones. These items should not be brought into the Academy at all, and, if seen, will be confiscated. Mobile phones are only for emergency use on the way to the Academy or on the way home, not for entertainment purposes.  We allow students to have them only for this reason.  They should be placed inside bags on entry to the Academy and remain there for the rest of the day.  If they are seen out during the day, they will be confiscated.  For security purposes, students are able to take their phone to reception first thing in the morning before lessons start and hand it in should they choose.  It will be labelled and stored in a locked cabinet and available for collection at 3:10pm.

Students in Y7 - 9 are not permitted to bring a smart phone to the academy. This is part of or commitment to smartphone free childhood. If a student in Y7 - 9 has a smart phone confiscated, a parent or carer must collect the device from the academy.

Students in Y10 - 13 may bring a smart phone to the academy, but if see or heard it will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the day. If a student has a phone confiscated for the second time, parents and carers must collect the device.
