Art & Design

The art department is a lively, exciting and stimulating department. Students are taught a variety of skills such as drawing, painting, printing, ceramics, sculpture, installation and digital media.

Read the latest news from our art, dance and music departments, including new projects and trips.

Students are encouraged to develop their skills technically and conceptually. From the start they are nurtured and encouraged to think and work independently, and set themselves high standards.

Students are introduced to contemporary and historical artists, designers and craftspeople and encouraged to question and critically engage with the world around them. This is further supported through our artist in residence programme and through the Centre for Creative Explorations (CCE) which is situated in the art department.

Students take pride in their work and produce exciting and interesting pieces that are shown not only around the school but, through the CCE, also go out into the local community.

You can also follow the work of the Art department on Instagram at @hgaed_artdepartment and @cceathgaed_.

GCSE and A Level

At GCSE students set themselves their own themes and take ownership for their projects in discussion with their teachers. At this stage they make their own choices on media and get to explore many different processes and experimental work.

This course is extremely successful with excellent GCSE results. At A Level, many of the students choose to pursue art for further education and have achieved 100% success for art college entry. GCSE and A level students have an exhibition of their work at the end of their course.

Trips and visits

Gallery trips and/or artist workshops are organised for all key stages. Artists in residence are invited to run sessions to enhance students’ learning and awareness of professional artists. Art clubs are run to support all students at all stages.
