Students attend Gordon Brown lecture
Sixth Form students from Harris East Dulwich Post-16 attended the John Harvard Memorial Lecture at The Old Vic Theatre on Thursday 20 January.
The special guest speaker was former Prime Minister Gordon Brown in a rare public appearance. The lecture was titled 'A Better Globalisation: How America and Britain can deliver jobs and justice' and explored how a strong transatlantic partnership can respond to global economic challenges and inequalities.
Although it was quite a difficult topic, Mr Brown managed to make it come alive as he spoke with passion and humour about the importance of co-operation between nation states rather than isolation and protectionism.
In particular, he warned that the world is facing an epidemic of youth unemployment and that the priority of all Governments is to work together to ensure that young people are not the biggest victims of the global crises.
Students were impressed with his compassion and were grateful for the opportunity to hear the insights of such an influential international statesman.
The John Harvard memorial lecture is held annually to celebrate the life and work of John Harvard, who was born in Southwark in 1607 before emigrating to Massachusetts, USA, and who left his collection of books and half of his estate to help found Harvard University.
