Shakespeare for Years 8 and 10 - in Richmond and Southwark

Southwark Playhouse

Students in years 8 and 10 have both recently enjoyed trips to the theatre to see Shakespeare plays.

Shakespeare’s Scottish Play

Southwark Playhouse invited us to attend a schools’ adaptation of Macbeth. Students from Year 10 (pictured right) sat in the round, on benches and cushions on the floor, while three actors used lighting, sound and movement to perform the tragedy.

The text was edited to an hour without interval and created a brilliantly paced adaptation which kept the plot and emotions clear and compelling. The same students had had a Science exam the morning before the show, so we’re glad they had such a treat on their last day before more revision over half term!

Orange Tree

Romeo Romeo!

Year 8 students were fortunate to travel to Richmond for a special adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.  A schools’ production of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy allowed the girls to see the play contextualised in a London-street setting; with the Montagues and Capulets portrayed as warring family businesses of street-traders and estate agents respectively.

The Orange Tree is a theatre in the round and the cast made use of the three tiers of seating, with Romeo making a very daring climb up to Juliet in the balcony scene. This show will have solidified the plot for students of the text and should serve to demonstrate the versatility of this story of tempestuous teenage love.
