Year 7 Enjoy A First Taste Of Geography Fieldwork

Geography1To coincide with National Fieldwork Week, 6-10 June 2022, our Year 7 students went out of the classroom to have their very first taste of geographical fieldwork. 

Investigating where would be the best location to put a new picnic bench, students used a range of data collection methods to assess the environmental quality and microclimate of three different locations on the school site. 

The bi-polar Environmental Quality Survey encouraged students to give each site a score based on how busy, noisy, littered, smelly or open a site was.

Geography3The microclimate at each site was investigated by measuring wind speed, wind direction, temperature and cloud cover. To explore our understanding of microclimate in more detail students also drew and annotated a field sketch at each location to identify the physical and human features that might influence the microclimate. 

For example, at the location we call The Round, there is a lot more glass and concrete which makes this location feel hotter. The data collection sparked lots of questions and many students recognised that our data collection plan could be improved by collecting multiple sets of data over different times of the day. 

Students returned to the classroom and in groups learnt how to convert their data into a radar graph, scatter graph and annotated field sketches. Truly geography in action!
