Handball KS3 team in National Championships

Harris Bulldogs Key Stage 3 handball team took part in the 1st qualifying round of the National Handball Championships at Mayesbrook Arena (pictured), the Olympic Handball Training Arena, on Friday 16 March.

This was a real test for the team, playing on a full-size Olympic court, with offical referrees, and having to abide by all the Olympic rules and regulations.

Before leaving the Academy, the Bulldogs had an inspiring and motivational talk by Aimee to focus their minds to the task in hand.

On arrival at Mayesbrook Arena, the students were greated by England players and coaches, who even showed them a few new skills whilst they were warming up on court!

The Bulldogs were in the same qualifying group as: Helenswood, Hastings; Ark Academy, Wembley; Erith School; and Bexleyheath Academy.

The games were only six minutes, with no half time, time outs or warm up time! This meant that the tactics were a) shoot at goal on sight and b) pressure the opposition 24/7!!

1st Game v Bexleyheath - Won 4-1

2nd Game v Ark Academy - Won 2-1

3rd Game v Erith School - Drew 0-0

4th Game v Ark Academy - Lost 2-1

The Bulldogs played absolutely superb in all their games and were very unfortunate to lose their first game against Ark Academy.

The bulldogs had a nervous 20 minute wait to see whether they had made it through to the 2nd and final round before the finals, dependant on results of other fixtures.

Overall the bulldogs came 2nd and made it through to the next round. Well done to everyone!

This is such an excellent achievement for the girls as they have only taken up the sport since October with only one hour a week of training after school, compared to other schools that have the sport as part of their curriculum as well as after-school clubs.

A special mention must go to Eddie, who has given up so much of his own time to support fixtures both home and away........along with all his expert tactical advice too.

The 2nd qualifying round is on Friday 18th May and if all goes well then it's the finals are on Saturday 23rd June.

Woman of the Match was Billie Walker for her continuous chasing of the ball in attack and pressurising the opposition at every opportunity.

Team: Billie Walker, Tamika HARLOW, Halima TURAY, Shanaya WallaceDeztanie EDWARDS, Miar HOWELLS STANTON, Bintu FREEMAN, Mariam DIABY, Alyssa REENE, Jenah FRANCIS, Chelsea PEART, Nisha TANIYA, Chenoray EDWARDS, Dejarna LEWIS

Goals: Billie x 6, Tamika x 1
