Artist in Residence 2024 - Nazneen Ayuub-Wood

N1We are really excited to have Nazneen Ayuub-Wood working with us this year to develop our next project with the Centre for Creative Explorations.

Nazneen (pictured) is an artist, spatial practitioner and researcher who has a Masters in Research in Fine Arts & Humanities and an MA in Design Critical Practice. She has exhibited in solo and group shows and events in London and New York.

Her art and spatial practice is socially activated through the re-imagining of perceptions around emotions, communication and co-existence.

By creating parallel spaces to host encounters, she invites people to discuss and speculate about possible futures. The nature of her participatory practice has been delivered through performance, installations, workshops and one-to-one sessions. Her practice includes the use of purpose-built mobile booths, furniture, audio and music to provide a backdrop to explore possible presents and futures.

Other ways of living

In the current climate crisis we all need to consider how we live in the world and how best to move forward. Students often discuss how they feel they are being left to deal with all the issues previous generations have created. Nazneen is actively exploring other ways of living in the world.

Last year, for example, she went on a research trip to Panama in South America, where she met a woman called Mary, who lives in a nature reserve with a family made up of Tamarind monkeys, red squirrels, a sloth, woodpeckers and a diabetic dog.

Nazneen was also taken by a man from the Embera tribe deep into the forest to see his village. Their way of living was made entirely from the island, their homes, clothes, food, jewelry, music and art. Their living room was one big structure in the village. Everything was connected, with plants, animals and human species all co-existing together.

This has inspired Nazneen and she is inviting students at HGAED to re-imagine new ways to communicate with ourselves, and with plants and animal species to create alternative worlds.

For updates on our last project ‘Digital Futures’ and for this upcoming project, please see the Centre for Creative Explorations website: https://centreforcreativeexplorations.weebly.com/

Nazeen travelled to Central America to explore how the Embera tribe are finding other ways of living.
