Celebrating Reading for Pleasure
At HGAED, fostering a love of reading is a top priority. The last few months have been busy in terms of promoting and celebrating reading for pleasure.
Dozens of students have been enjoying reading interventions to help them gain confidence with their comprehension, vocabulary and reading aloud. Some of these interventions have been run by staff, but we are also lucky enough to have excellent, generous and responsible students in years ten and thirteen mentoring younger students in years seven and eight.
A brilliant team of twenty fully trained year ten students have been meeting once a week to read with their year seven partners and discuss their favourite books and authors. Meanwhile, four A-level students have taken time out from studying to spend half an hour a week to read with small groups of year eight students.
We have also been celebrating our freedom to read with the ‘Caught Reading Project’. Students have been trying to identify twenty members of staff featured in wanted posters across the academy, having been caught reading. Well done to Nethumi in year seven for being the first to identify all staff members. Teachers have also been giving out tokens to students who they ‘catch’ reading across the academy with many prizes to be won. Congratulations to Praise, also in year seven, for winning the January prize for being caught reading an amazing ten times! Eloise in year nine, won the prize draw of tokens. Well done to everyone who has taken part in any of these projects.
