Science Truly Put into Action

A trip to the University of London saw 40 students enjoy a whole day of interesting lectures as part of their GCSE Science in Action course.

Physicist Michael De Podesta opened the lectures with fascinating facts about the world of science, which really got students thinking. They were then given the chance to take part in a variety of interactive and inspiring experiments, including looking at how microscopic atoms are not quite what we might expect.

Sujata Kunda lectured on some of her favorite materials, including introducing us to the tail of a comet, while Tom Sheldon spoke on science and the media and how science is "hacked and mangled" to meet the "voracious demands of the media machine".

Nic Harrigan introduced the students to the world of Quantum Mechanics, and Robert Winston closed the lecture with his talk on his work in developing gynecological surgical techniques that improved fertility treatments.

“It was very interesting and it described how the science around us is amazing,” said Isio Emumejakpor.  Monique Mandishona said she "liked the atoms experiment especially when he described nuclear fusion," while Khadijah Khanom Muhammad enjoyed the talk about science and the media "because I could relate to it and put two sides to an argument.”
