GCSE art students at Goldsmiths University

On 1st June 2012 Goldsmiths University invited a small group of year 9 GCSE students to take part in an event which promoted the discussion of art and politics and how art can communicate political issues.

Three mural artists from Northern Ireland had worked in collaboration with a local school. They created a mural discussing issues around the New Cross Fire, which occurred in the 1980s, highlighting issues of racism. The mural provided a starting point for a discussion amongst the invited school groups from across London.

Halima, Adama, Morgan, Saousen, Afunmi, Princess, and Trisha, year 9 GCSE art students, stood up in front of their peers, raised issues, thoughts and insights and recited poetry inspired by the mural.

Some of the students went on to discuss issues that they felt were relevant in the context of Harris Girls. They spoke passionately about contemporary female issues, and the insecurities young girls can feel. They also aired their concerns about teenage pregnancy and the issues of how having low self-esteem can lead to having sex at a young age. They felt these issues are not discussed enough, and is something they would like to highlight.

We now hope to work in collaboration with Goldsmiths University, to develop an art project that will discuss these issues further.
