Announcement

Arrangements for September 2022 - Letter From The Principal

Dear Parent/Carer

As we reach the end of the academic year, we start to look ahead to September in order that parents and students feel prepared. There have been some significant changes to the academy day, including an adjustment the arrival time for all students which is now 8.37am. Please do read this letter with your child so they know the adjustments ahead of their start in September.

Our website contains a wealth of information about the academy, along with academy news stories and letters, which can be referred to at any time. The Key Information section of the website is particularly important as it details term dates, policies, and subject information. This is regularly updated so please do refer to this.

Return dates

Our Year 7 students will start on Friday 2nd September no later than 8.37am, this gives our year 7’s the opportunity to settle into school life and the routine of secondary school. Our year 8 – 11 students will return on Monday 5th September no later than 8.37am. On the first day of term, students will report to their Coach during period 1 and will be given their new timetable for the year. We also use this first lesson to welcome students back and go through learning routines so that expectations are understood by all.

Parent Pay

Our academy continues to be cashless, and we use Parent Pay as a method of payment for school lunches, books and trips. If your child already attends the academy, your login details will remain the same, please do contact reception if you need your login details. If you are Year 7 parent, you will not have a HGAED Parent Pay account until 31st August, details of how to access this account will be given to your daughter on Friday 2nd September. Lunch will be provided for all year 7 students on their first day.

Free School Meals

If you are not currently entitled to Free School Meals we encourage all families to check their entitlement using the www.cloudforedu.org.uk/ofsm/harrisfederation link. This is especially important if your financial circumstances have changed. The academy will send reminders when your eligibility is due to run out.

Arriving at school

Please note that from September we will have a single arrival and dismissal time for all year groups. All students need to arrive at the academy before 8.37am, arrivals after this time will incur a late mark and a 30-minute same day detention. The student gates will open at

8.15am. If students need to arrive before this time they must arrive via the academy reception and attend the library. If students arrive before 8.15am it is essential they sign in at the library, so we know which students are on site in case of an emergency.

Timings of the day

We have aligned the timings of the school day, all students should arrive by 8.37am and will be dismissed at 3.10pm, except for year 11 on Monday as they have a period 6 lesson. The timings of lessons are detailed below.

Late to lessons

Punctuality is incredibly important at all points during the school day, including lessons and coaching time. Students who arrive late to lessons and coaching time will receive a late mark and will serve a 30-minute detention the next day. Students who are late to the academy will receive a same day detention.

Items required for learning

Students must bring a school bag every day, along with a pencil case so they are prepared for learning. Students require the following items:

Essential

Non-essential

Blue or black pens

Red pen (for marking their own work) Ruler

Rubber

Pencil Sharpener Scientific Calculator

A black school bag that is big enough to hold A4 books and folders

Reading book

Non-essential Pencil crayons Highlighters

*students should not bring Tipex or erasing fluid to school.

Uniform expectations

We expect all students to arrive to the academy in full school uniform. This is checked at the school gate when they arrive in the morning. Our uniform is a black HGAED blazer, white blouse, black skirt or trousers, black school shoes (no trainers or boots), white or black socks or tights. The blue HGAED jumper is optional and must be worn under the blazer (not instead of).

Some students have been tying their jumpers at the back, causing them to stretch. Please ensure any such fastenings are removed before the start of term, as students will be expected to wear their jumpers properly from September. Students are permitted to wear a plain black or dark navy blue, outdoor coat (no logos, denim, leather jackets or hoodies).

Headscarves worn for religious reasons should be plain black or white with no studs, sequins or other decoration. A lanyard or badge holder (provided by the academy), containing the student’s school ID card is to be worn at all times, from arrival at the academy gates. New year 7 students will be issued with a lanyard in the Autumn term. Students arriving without full school uniform will be provided with the correct items before attending lessons.

Jewellery, piercings, nails and hair colour

We have a strict uniform policy which all students must adhere to while on the academy site. We do not permit false nails, false eyelashes or nail colours which are not considered natural. We do not allow students to attend the Academy with hair that has been dyed unnatural colours. Students are only permitted to wear one set of small stud earrings in each ear. Students are permitted to wear a wristwatch; this should not be an internet enabled watch (such as an Apple watch). We do not permit any other piercings, and these must be removed before students come through the gate. All necklaces, bracelets, beads, anklets, and rings should not be worn. Any items which are not part of the uniform policy will be confiscated by staff and returned at the end of term.

Mobile phones and other electronic items

Mobile phones and other electronic items (Apple watches, air pods) are not permitted and if seen at any time during the academy day, will be confiscated. If you need to contact your child during the academy day, we ask that you support our no mobile phone policy and contact our academy reception who will get the message to your child. We appreciate your support with this.

Food and drink

Only water is permitted to be brought to the academy and we encourage all students to bring a refillable water bottle. We have various water fountains around the academy. We will confiscate any drinks other than water. Food is available to purchase at break and lunchtime in the canteen and at our tuck shop on the drive. Students are also able to bring a packed lunch, we have benches around the site and students may eat their packed lunch in our canteen.

Contacting students during the academy day

If you need to contact a student during the academy day, please do so via the academy reception and we will get the message to the student. Any student who needs to leave the academy before the end of the academy day must see their Head of House for a permission slip to leave the academy. Students will need to sign out of reception.

Parents Evenings

The academy hosts a range of parental engagement evenings throughout the academic year. This includes Parent’s Evenings, Parent Information Evenings and Virtual events tailored specifically to year groups. Dates of these events can be found on the calendar on the academy website.

Reading

Parents often ask how they can support students to be successful. We always recommend students read widely and often, ideally daily. The summer holidays are a great opportunity for students to engage with reading for pleasure and visiting their local library. Our recommended reading lists can be found on the academy website. Current students are also able to access Bedrock over the summer break.

Sharing information with us

If you have any concerns or need to share any information with us, please email the students Head of House. If your child is in year 7 and you are unsure who this is, please direct your email to info@harrisdulwichgirls.org.uk. Providing us with information helps us to support students when they start in September. Please be aware that email accounts are not monitored over the summer holiday but will be checked when staff return to the academy on the 1st September.

Support over the summer holiday

All current students have been provided with the following information should they requires support over the summer holidays.
